Why Jason

 Jason Harfield brings more than three decades of leadership experience and more than 20 years of board and board-facing experience across critical infrastructure, safety-critical operations and highly regulated environments. 


As former Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Airservices Australia, he led a national organisation through major transformation, strategic reform, financial pressure, cultural change and the disruption of COVID-19, while maintaining a strong focus on safety, service continuity and long-term capability. 


He brings a practical board perspective on governance, risk, culture, stakeholder accountability, technology adoption and organisational resilience, shaped by close engagement with government, regulators, Defence, customers and international partners.


A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Royal Aeronautical Society, Jason is also an author and speaker on leadership, stewardship and complexity.

Drawing on two thousand years of Italian viticulture, Jason explores what the vineyard can teach leaders about stewardship, reinvention, timing, culture and practical judgement.
 

Jason spent nearly a decade leading a safety-critical national organisation through financial pressure, cultural reform, major transformation and the disruption of COVID-19. The lessons from that experience were not theoretical. They were learned through decisions that carried consequence.
 

During the pandemic, with a long-planned trip to Italy cancelled, Jason turned to a serious study of Italian wine. What began as curiosity became a disciplined exploration of history, craft and culture. The more he studied Italian vineyards, the more familiar the leadership patterns became: systems under pressure, tradition challenged by disruption, identity diluted by scale, regulation provoking innovation and culture determining whether change took hold or failed.
 

UNCORKED is the reflection that followed. Across twelve lessons, it asks questions every serious leader must eventually face.
 

How do you protect what matters when everything is under pressure? How do you lead transformation without losing the soul of what you are building? How do you know whether the tradition you are defending is worth preserving — or simply habit wearing the clothes of principle?
 

This is not a book about wine and leadership. It is a book about judgement, stewardship and leading for what endures — seen through the Italian vineyard.
