Why Jason

 Jason Harfield brings more than three decades of leadership experience and more than 20 years of board and board-facing experience across critical infrastructure, safety-critical operations and highly regulated environments. 


As former Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Airservices Australia, he led a national organisation through major transformation, strategic reform, financial pressure, cultural change and the disruption of COVID-19, while maintaining a strong focus on safety, service continuity and long-term capability. 


He brings a practical board perspective on governance, risk, culture, stakeholder accountability, technology adoption and organisational resilience, shaped by close engagement with government, regulators, Defence, customers and international partners.


A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Royal Aeronautical Society, Jason is also an author and speaker on leadership, stewardship and complexity.

Drawing on Jason’s experience in complex leadership environments, and his deepening study of Italy’s vineyards and winemaking traditions, the book reflects on enduring themes such as resilience, reinvention, patience, judgement and the stewardship required to lead well in a more complex world. 


About the book

At first glance, leadership and Italian wine may seem worlds apart. Yet across centuries, Italian vineyards have faced disruption, regulation, uncertainty, reinvention and the demands of preserving identity while adapting to change.


Uncorked brings these worlds together. Through stories drawn from Italy’s wine regions, Jason explores how enduring leadership is shaped not only by strategy and ambition, but by timing, care, culture, resilience and stewardship over time.


This is not a book about wine alone. It is a reflection on leadership, complexity and what it means to build something that lasts.


Why Jason wrote it

During the pandemic years, Jason’s long-standing fascination with Italy deepened into a serious study of its history, wine and culture. Over time, that journey became more than a personal interest. It became a lens through which to reflect on leadership itself.


In Uncorked, he draws together lessons from both boardrooms and vineyards to explore how organisations and leaders can navigate complexity with greater judgement, humanity and perspective.
